At the TRINS junior school, students from class 2 to class 5 are carefully moulded into independent thinkers and thoughtful learners by a group of committed teachers. They are helped to develop into competent individuals equipped to go forward with a positive, caring and purposeful approach to life and its constantly changing situations. They are helped to give their best in the tasks that they undertake. Through the active learning process, students confidently inquire, question, reason, voice opinions, solve problems and reflect on their learning. A typical school day consists of a total of nine lessons of academic and extracurricular interest.English,Reading,Maths,Science/EVS,Humanities,Malayalam,French/German/Hindi,PE,Swimming,Art,Music,Club,Reflection,Assembly and Prep constitute the various lessons of a week. Students gain knowledge of each topic by setting definite lesson objectives, understanding the relevance of learning about a topic, using various learning processes, creating a product of their learning and finally reflecting upon their learning. English and Reading Teachers aim to develop excellent communication skills in students by providing access to a vast library and a variety of interesting reading, writing, listening and speaking opportunities. Prescribed level textbooks of the British National Curriculum are followed. Maths The aim is to help students enjoy the subject and develop confidence and ability to use it in different settings. They develop their knowledge and understanding of mathematics through practical activity, exploration and discussion. Students use textbooks of the British National Numeracy Strategy backed by other activities that help them further understand the concepts of time, space, shape, money, measures, and graphical representation. EVS (class 2)/ Science (classes 3-5) Students are encouraged to ask questions, to hypothesize and to test out their ideas experimentally so that scientific ideas are well understood. Students understand and respect the world around them through activities that include learning about forces and movement, investigating light, sound and music, electricity and magnetism, studying the variety of life and living processes, looking at the Earth in Space, materials, and weather. Humanities Through the study of history, the aim is to develop an understanding of people who have lived in the past, the ways in which we learn about the past and an ability to make sense of the world in which we live today. In Geography, students understand the physical world and human society in which they are growing up. They develop an understanding of local, regional and world environments through activities designed to develop the practical mapping skills. Malayalam/Hindi/French/German Malayalam is compulsory in Junior School either as second language or as third language.Hindi can be chosen as second or third language.French or German can be chosen as second language. Through creative reading, listening and speaking activities, the 3 languages are taught in highly stimulating and interesting lessons that develop an avid interest for the language. PE and Swimming Through the development of physical skills and understanding of physical strengths, limitations and controls each child learns more about him or herself. Each class has two P.E .lessons and two swimming lessons each week. Art and Music Students explore, understand and develop their talents in as many different creative ways as possible. They use a wide variety of materials and instruments to develop different skills and techniques. They extend their sense of rhythm and tone, colour, and texture and appreciate their own or others creativity. Assessment and Record keeping Student progress is assessed through continuous internal formative assessment in the form of class work, homework, oral /project work and cycle tests. Summative assessment is done in the form of two end of semester examinations. A student record file is maintained with all records of student progress that will be available to parents on Open Days.
